Uniting for a Greener Tomorrow: AIPH and BIE on Expo 2023 Doha

October 07, 2023

In the heart of Doha, a beacon of green innovation and global unity blossoms as Qatar proudly hosts the Expo 2023 Doha. This monumental event, inaugurated this October, is a global celebration that brings together nations from all corners of the world to address one of the most pressing issues humanity faces today: climate change. Esteemed AIPH and BIE leaders have shared their insights and commendations for the opening of Expo 2023 Doha, highlighting its significance and the anticipations for the solutions it will foster.

Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions, Dimitri Kerkentzes, expressed his expectations for Expo 2023 Doha, recognizing it as a pivotal platform where nations can collaboratively work towards addressing the looming threat of climate change. He stated, "Humanity has been able to overcome multitudes of challenges over our history. This is one of those examples where we give countries from all over the world an opportunity to come together to work on the biggest global issue of the future." Kerkentzes also emphasized the aptness of Qatar as the host, given its centuries-long expertise in thriving amidst an arid climate, which many countries are increasingly grappling with. Expo 2023 Doha is anticipated to be a fertile ground for discussions and solutions that will shape our future over the coming six months.

Tim Briercliffe, Secretary General of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), praised the event as a significant stride in global horticulture, especially considering the seemingly contradictory concept of hosting an international horticulture exhibition in the desert. He remarked, "It is the first time that we approve an international horticulture exhibition in the desert, and it can seem like a contradiction for horticulture but here it is an illustration of the challenges faced not just by desert regions but by the whole world." Briercliffe acknowledged Qatar's proficiency and professionalism in hosting international events, making it the apt locale for such a pivotal event. The expo, themed "Green Desert, Better Environment," aligns seamlessly with AIPH's mission of championing the power of plants and believing in their crucial role in creating liveable cities and providing solutions the world direly needs.
