November 17, 2023

Expo 2023 Doha is hosting the 16th Qatar University Life Sciences Symposium (QULSS 2023), held under the theme of “Eco-Friendly Sustainable Solutions for a Green Desert Environment.” Held at the Expo 2023 Doha Congress Centre from 15 –16th November, this academic assembly is a hub where innovative ideas for a more sustainable, greener future converge.

Aligned with Expo 2023 Doha's visionary theme, "Green Desert, Better Environment," and the ambitious Qatar National Vision 2030, the symposium is a bold stride towards reimagining desert landscapes. This initiative, part of the first horticultural exhibition in a desert climate, focuses on transforming ecosystems through horticultural innovation, sustainable practices, and technological advancements, positioning Qatar as a leader in the 'Green City' concept in the Middle East.

QULSS 2023 brings together a distinguished roster of 17 professional speakers from renowned institutions like Qatar University, Sultan Qaboos University, University of Minnesota, University Technology Malaysia, and Arabian Gulf University to name a few. Experts will lead a series of sessions and workshops, delving into critical themes such as Optimising Water Resources, Enriching Desert Soils, Modern Agriculture in Arid Land, and Sustainable Qatari Vegetation. Each session is designed to unravel the complexities of desert environments and offer tangible, innovative solutions.

Key highlights of the symposium include cutting-edge discussions on the use of advanced technologies for optimal water resource utilisation, such as the development of Graphene Oxide-Incorporated Thin Film Nanocomposite Membranes for desalination. The symposium also sheds light on the transformative potential of wastewater as a sustainable resource in GCC countries, aligning with the Water-Energy-Food Nexus. The discourse also delves into the potential of desert ecosystems, particularly the role of native plants in sustainable desert living, blending technology and traditional knowledge to promote sustainable desert environments.

QULSS 2023 has set new benchmarks in innovative solutions and collaborative dialogues, shaping effective frameworks for sustainable communities and landscapes. The collaborations forged at Expo 2023 Doha are set to influence future efforts, steering us towards a reality where sustainability is not just an aspiration but a lived reality for all.
